Krishna Books and Healthy Vegetarian Recipes at the Hare Krsna Iskcon Temple

Vegan Chana Masala

Ingredients (use vegan versions):

  • 2 tablespoon vegetable oil
  • 1 medium onion, chopped
  • 1 large clove of garlic, minced
  • 1 tablespoon curry
  • 1 tablespoon tomato paste (I used ketchup, how embarassing)
  • 15 oz can of chick peas drained, reserving 3 tablespoon liquid
  • 1/2 tablespoon lemon juice
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • fresh black pepper
  • crushed red pepper, optional to taste
  • 1 tablespoon margarine

Directions:

I don’t know how authentic this is, but I whipped it up last night. It tasted great to me. Heat oil on medium high heat. Fry onions until slightly browned. Reduce heat to medium. Add garlic, curry, and paste. Stir and simmer about 2 minutes. Add chick peas, liquid, lemon juice, salt, and black pepper. Simmer 5-6 minutes, stirring occasionally. Add red pepper to taste. Add margarine, stirring through to melt it. Stir and simmer for 5 minutes more or until peas are softened and dish is hot. Serve over rice.

Srila Prabhupada Lecture on Srimad Bhagavatam 1.8.28. Los Angeles, April 20, 1973. Part 3.

TRANSLATION. O learned brahmanas, when Sukadeva Gosvami recited Bhagavatam there [in the presence of Emperor Pariksit], I heard him with rapt attention, and thus, by his mercy, I learned the Bhagavatam from that great and powerful sage. Now I shall try to make you hear the very same thing as I learned it from him and as I have realized it.

PURPORT. One can certainly see directly the presence of Lord Sri Krsna in the pages of Bhagavatam if one has heard it from a self-realized great soul like Sukadeva Gosvami. One cannot, however, learn Bhagavatam from a bogus hired reciter whose aim of life is to earn some money out of such recitation and employ the earning in sex indulgence. No one can learn Srimad-Bhagavatam who is ociated with persons engaged in sex life. That is the secret of learning Bhagavatam Nor can one learn Bhagavatam from one who interprets the text by his mundane scholarship. One has to learn Bhagavatam from the representative of Sukadeva Gosvami, and no one else, if one at all wants to see Lord Sri Krsna in the pages. That is the process, and there is no alternative. Suta Gosvami is a bona fide representative of Sukadeva Gosvami because he wants to present the message which he received from the great learned brahmana. Sukadeva Gosvami presented Bhagavatam as he heard it from his great father, and so also Suta Gosvami is presenting Bhagavatam as he had heard it from Sukadeva Gosvami. Simple hearing is not all; one must realize the text with proper attention. The word nivista means that Suta Gosvami drank the juice of Bhagavatam through his ears. That is the real process of receiving Bhagavatam. One should hear with rapt attention from the real person, and then he can at once realize the presence of Lord Krsna in every page. The secret of knowing Bhagavatam is mentioned here. No one can give rapt attention who is not pure in mind. No one can be pure in mind who is not pure in action. No one can be pure in action who is not pure in eating, sleeping, fearing and mating. But somehow or other if someone hears with rapt attention from the right person, at the very beginning one can uredly see Lord Sri Krsna in person in the pages of Bhagavatam.

What is the best version of the Bhagavad Gita available?

There are about 70 comments on this subject of a different nature and I want to know the truth!

The best version of the Bhagavad Gita is  ‘Bhagavad Gita AS IT IS’  by Srila Prabhupada. It is the only book which has not adulterated any thing. It remains true to the real spirit of Indian philosophy and is obvious that the writer has only the best interests of man at heart. also this book explains every verse word for word, with direct Sanskrit to English translation. You can read it online at this link: http://asitis.com/ or you can get the hard-copy at: http://krishnastore.com.au/product_info.php?ref=80&products_id=407&affiliate_banner_id=6

Modern Translation of the Bhagavad Gita?

I’m looking for the best translation of the Bhagavad Gita that is easy to follow, etc. It can either be an online version or a print version.

I will submit two modern translations of the masterpiece scripture Bhagavad Gita. First, Stephen Mitchell ( Three Rivers Press, www.randomhouse.com) has presented an easy to read translation of Bhagavad Gita. Secondly, my personal favorite translation is by Eknath Easwaran (Penguin Classics). Eknath presents a valuable introduction to the book, and also an introduction for each chapter. The end notes and glossary are very helpful as well.

Both translations are excellent but, as mentioned, Eknaths translation is my preference. If you have an interest in religion and spirituality Eknath Easwaran's translation of Bhagavad Gita is a worthwhile purchase and unrivaled in the wisdom expounded therein. I hope that this information was helpful!

Vegan Cheesy Lasagna

Ingredients (use vegan versions):

  • 2-3 jars of favorite spaghetti sauce
  • 1-16 oz bag of spinach leaves
  • 2-3 jars of tomato sauce
  • 1/2 lb. carrots
  • 1/4 cup chopped fresh parsley
  • 2 cloves minced garlic
  • 1/4 cup canned low-sodium veggie broth
  • 1 lb. herbed tofu
  • 8 oz. vegan cream cheese
  • 2 Tblspns. lemon juice
  • 1/8 teaspoon nutmeg
  • 12 lasagna noodles, cooked
  • 1/4 cup nutritional yeast, optional
Directions:

Slice carrots and steam, set aside. Add olive oil to a large skillet, place over medium-high heat until hot. Add parsley and garlic, saute for 1 minute.. Add carrots and veggie broth; simmer uncovered for 5 min. Add herbed tofu, vegan cream cheese, and lemon juice; stir well. Cook over medium heat stirring constantly until fake cheesy stuff starts to melt.Stir in nutmeg (possibly you could add some about 1/4 C. nutritional yeast at this step, just to make it a little bit more cheesy!). Remove from heat; keep warm.

Place 3 lasagna noodles in bottom of 11×7 baking dish. spread carrot mixture over top, place 3 noodles on top of that and spread tomato sauce and spinach on top of those, repeat process until all noodles are used up… top with spaghetti sauce. Cover and bake 15 min. at 375 degrees. Uncover and bake an additional 20-30 min. until it is thoroughly heated… use your own judgment. Usually a lasagna takes about 45 minutes to cook thoroughly. this is the best lasagna i have ever made or had, or non-vegan… it is superb… your non-vegan friends will be wowed!!!!!!!

Serves a lot.

Usually the deities - Jagannath (Krishna), Baladeva and Subhadra are worshipped within the temple, but on the day of the Rath festival they are taken through the streets so that everyone can have the fortune of seeing them. Three richly decorated chariots, resembling temple structures, are pulled through the streets. This commemorates the annual journey of Lord Jagannath, Lord Balabhadra and their sister Subhadra to their aunt’s temple (Gundicha Mandir) which is situated at a distance of 2 km from their temple.
